Collage Challenge #1

I am offering a 2-part collage challenge this month. I hope to make it a monthly event.

The first challenge is to send me a group of 6 - 10 papers to use in collage. These should be small, fitting in a letter size envelope. The challenge is to make them as diverse as possible. That is, make them as different from each other as you can. Think VARIETY in color, value, pattern, scale of pattern, etc. These should be abstract in content, not images. You could include part of an image, but it should not be recognizable as an image. Gather materials from your own stash, junk mail, magazines, decorative papers, gift wrap, maps, etc.

Send your envelopes to:
Jane Davies Studios
Collage Challenge
PO Box 45
Rupert, Vermont  05768

Send papers by the end of February. I will choose a few winners (in the sense of the best VARIETY, the papers that are most different from each other), and make a collage out of each one. I'll post the images and send the originals to those who sent the papers.

The second challenge is this: I have put a collage sheet, 8.5x11" up on a Flickr group that you can download. Print it out, and make one or two (or more) small collages. Here is an image of the collage sheet for this challenge:

This can be downloaded from Flickr at higher resolution, and printed out on 8.5x11" paper.

The rules are as follows:
Download the Collage Sheet here. Click on the arrow, and choose "original" size.

  • Use only the collage papers in the downloaded sheet.
  • You may add one color of paint, and one more mark such as a line, a scribble, or a pattern.
  • And remember that it is more fun if we are all bound by the same set of directions.
Join the Flickr group, and post your own collages - scans or photos. I suggest you keep them small. I've posted two of my own, which are 5.5"x7.5". I will post below as well:

Join the Flickr group.

  1. So should the papers in an envelope go together in some way?

    1. The papers in the envelope should be as DIVERSE as possible. This is like the opposite of swatches you'd put together for an interior decorating project. They should, however, all be reasonably collage weight. Not too heavy, that is.

  2. Hi Jane. I’d love to participate in the challenge. When is the deadline for receiving the papers? I live in Panama and the mail isn’t as fast as it is in the US. I could do DHL but it’s really expensive.

    1. Let's say the end of the month for sending papers.

  3. Hi Jane, Do not want to join Yahoo. Any other way to participate?

    1. I did a pretty thorough investigation of posting options that don't require me to invite you, and Facebook was the only other option. I don't like the way FB looks for a gallery, whereas Flickr is made precisely for that. Sorry.

    2. Hi Jane, This really sounds like fun but I am reluctant to join the Flickr group as the Yahoo email requires a mobile phone number. And my current email address keeps me busy enough.
I will however have fun finding a variety of collage paper and will send them to you.
And another thought, I'm not sure what you mean about FB looking for a gallery. Is this something I should be concerned about?

    3. I use my Yahoo email for Flickr only and have never had a problem. I think most email services now want a mobile number so that they can cut down on spammers setting up accounts. I've had the Yahoo email for years and haven't checked it in most of that time. Just because you sign up doesn't mean you have to use the email account. :-)

  4. This challenge excites me very much! Creative collaborations are THE BEST!!
I will be sending you an envelope of collages papers. Thanks so much for this opportunity.
However for the other part of the challenge - joining Flickr - seems to illude me. I have tried five times to sign into Flckr and keep being told that my email address is not recognized. I'll try again later - very frustrating!

    1. Keep trying! Are you already a member of Flickr?

  5. I know it is a total PITA (pain in the **s), but would you consider sending back out a mix of papers to each member if we send you a SASE with our papers?

    1. Nope. BUT, actually, I could scan some and make them downloadable as 8.5"x11" collage sheets!

  6. Should the small papers we send in the letter-size envelope (is that a business envelope? Or flat 8.5x11?) be sized such that none are folded?

  7. Hi Jane, Thank you for the wonderful challenge! I've just uploaded my collage to the group. I don't have much experience with abstract collages yet and would be grateful for any kind of feedback if possible.

  9. Hi Jane, Regarding Challenge #2: I am to print out your 8.5X11 collage sheet and us it to create my own collage small collage sheets and I can add one color and lines.

    1. Yes, that's it. My "collage sheet" is not meant to be a piece of art in itself. It is just the sampling of papers I am giving you to make a collage. You can add one color of paint and one other mark such as a line or pattern.

  10. Thank you this will be fun, artists lets keep this simple and have fun with it, don't over complicate.

  11. Just pulled together some papers to send. Picking the papers was an interesting exercise in itself. It wasn’t just the act of pulling together a diverse selection, it was that I was finding pieces that I liked to much to give away! Suddenly some old pieces that never inspired much of anything seemed beautiful, unique, useful. hmmm. Good to look at my materials in a different light! Thanks for that.

  13. I have been a member of Flickr for years and absent for years! I just joined the group and will do the collage. No papers to send to you, unfortunately, at this time...Fun! Hope you make this a monthly challenge...

  14. In the papers we send to you, do you want us to identify each one with our name- as you say you will send papers back to winners?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. No, as long as you are identified wiht your mailing address on the envelope, that will suffice. I will not be mixing up papers, but keeping the collections intact.
