More Color Mixing

I am working on some new downloadable workshops that will be shorter, and they will focus on more bite-sized topics. Color mixing will definitely be one of them, and I might even divide it into two separate workshops.

This video is a sample of what one segment of such a workshop might look like. Each workshop may have twelve to sixteen short segments like this.

Please comment to let me know if there are any particular topic you would like me to address in a workshop that is formatted in this way.

  1. sounds great! as for a suggestion, i've been trying lesson 2 in dynamic composition - the 'abstract landscape' (this is with some of your mark-making students from the last class - you might remember a discussion about starting a closed FB page, which we did.) but i'm having a hard time and especially could have used more demo'ing and results in your lesson 2 video. i don't mind covering up my collage 'little darlings', but whether i try it with 'veiling' or a less transparent paint application, i seem to just end up with a mess, and the solution of 'just keep going' didn't seem to help as much as usual. i decided at least a part of my problem was due to using collage pieces with hard edges, which made the overlaid paint seem more of an assault than integral to the piece, paint applied over a soft torn edge seemed to help. but i'm still struggling and would love to see more 'painting into and over collage'. thanks, va
ps i was sorry i was too late posting my last lesson in mark-making to get your input on it. i believe i made some progress relinquishing 'control of the paint and letting it talk' ...or at least whisper ☺️

    1. Thanks for this! Come take a live workshop if you can. One tip I can give you is: let your paint dry between layers. If you layer wet over wet, it is hard not to get mud.

  3. I love the idea of short downloadable bits. I am most interested in techniques.... as you used to do a lot of back in the "old days." I have loved doing your deli paper printing technique and rubbing alcohol "wiping away" technique and roller removing paint technique. I use those all the time..... More techniques like that please....

    1. Thanks for this input. These WILL be focused on technique. It is the concept stuff that takes more explanation and the breathing room that is possible in a more intense workshop.

  6. Dear Jane, i have bought almost all of the downloadable workshops and i am very thankfull for your great work. I have learned a lot and i am so happy.
What i would wish for me, would be more videos for composition ideas. I can learning best, when i can watch a video about a theme. And i would like more videos about collage.
I love courses with a lot of videos like your course `element of visual language`.
Thanks for all your work for people like me, which not have the possibility to take a real workshop. I am so happy that you offer online workshops. Thanks a lot.

    1. I can do collage videos. The Elements of Visual Language videos are not a course so much as an extension of the book. I will think about how I can incorporate composition ideas. For me, composition comes from seeing, and from a deeper well than mere layout, but maybe collage-without-painting is a good medium for composition ideas. THanks for the food for thought.

  11. Great idea having short sessions! And, loved this little mini session on mixing these complimentary colors. I also love to mix colors as I go and love what you created with yellow and purple. I need to give those two a try!

  14. Hi, I am enjoying your videos, thank you! I have a question about the paint you are using. Golden I see, but I can't locate that particular packaging, in large plastic bottles. Do you have a link? Is it heavy body? Thanks!

    1. I think I am using the 8 oz Golden fluid acrylics. You should be able to find them almost anywhere in the world. Ask Golden directly where they are available in your area.

  15. Thanks for offering. I would like you to address choosing a color palette for a project. How would we go about that process?
    Thanks again.

  16. Thanks for the video, it's great. I personally would love something about working contrasts; but all your videos are always useful and it always makes me want to rush grab my brushes and try something! I've learned so much watching them! It's the next best thing before I can actually afford to come overseas to attend one of your workshop for real. My dream!!!

    1. Choosing a color palette for a project. Yes, I could do something on that. Working with contrasts. That too. Contrast of color, or value, or scale, or character of marks, or depth....

  17. i would like to learn more about color contrast. IN MY LOVE OF CALM I TEND TO SHY AWAY from contrast but then its too dull. i nned to learn about color contrast. also... how one color seems to be contrasting but then when the color is laid down to another color it is NOT! what the heck is going on with that. not sure if that is the way it is and i have to figure out the right color or if its because i don't have enough experience. i need help with contrast. i also have a difficult time with color value. so i need an art byte for contrast and color value. thaks jane
