Vertical Experiments

I've been taking it a bit easy the last few weeks after months of an intense teaching schedule.   Time to recharge the batteries, then get in some real studio time.  I have been exploring a vertical format.  Over the years I've done loads of sketches of vertical pieces, but on paper I never seem to actually do them.  So I gave myself (and my Extreme Composition students) a challenge to work in exaggerated proportions.  Here are a few of my efforts.  All of these are 22" high.

This is one piece in three parts.
It's fun to try a new format! Vertical, extreme horizontal, way bigger than you are comfortable with, way smaller, modular.... give it a try!

  1. Jane.. love these. I challenged myself with a large horizontal piece that I stuck on a wall. What fun that was.. took me hours... hours, I tell you.
You can see it on my blog at http://thekeytomyart.wordpress.com/2012/10/30/a-pre-storm-art-day/

Nice to see you recharged and back in the groove.

  5. Jane, these are great! I like the elongated idea. It reminds of contemporary abstract Chinese scrolls.

  6. I am just loving these - I need to try this format! I, too, am impressed with your DVD. It really captures the spirit of your in-person classes, and I know I'll be going back to it over and over. Full disclosure: Jane gave me a copy. Regardless, I endorse it wholeheartedly!

  7. I've missed out on so much over the past few months - and I finally found a few minutes to spend on something unscheduled and undemanding. I chose to come HERE! It always is a comforting and inspiring place to be. I love the elongated format - the Oriental Scroll is always a pleasing layout. Your magic with circles, scribbles, and color makes the most of an ageless and always appealing design. Can't wait to get back into paper and paint. Soon, but not soon enough. Thanks for the diversion today. I can't wait to take in the video - as soon as I find it in the remaining boxes. Something to look forward to!
