New Pieces - Edge Location

I am working on a video, which I hope will be ready to post tomorrow, but in the meantime I thought I'd give you a quick look at some new work.  I delivered what felt like a truckload of art to VTica on Tuesday for the upcoming show, Journey Into Process (scroll to bottom of the page for info).  The show opens on Friday, July 1, and I will have it up in a gallery on my web site as well.

Here are two new pieces that are in the show:

Edge Location #3, acrylic, graphite on wood panel, 12"x12", $375

Edge Location #4, acrylic, ink, graphite on wood panel, 12"x12", $375

I am calling the series "Edge Location", though you have seen #1 and #2 as "Fresh Paint" pieces.  The series began as an exploration of atmosphere and depth against hard straight edges.  So for a title, I brainstormed the word edge, and came up in a Google search, with the term "edge location".  I love the sound of those words together, but still can't quite understand what the term means.  In the context of digital imaging, it has something to do with "sub-pixel values"; in the context of web services it appears to mean the location of data centers, where all that cyber material is located.  If anyone can shed light on the term "edge location", please comment!

What appeals to me about this mysterious or ambiguous meaning is how I think of edges in terms of tides and horizons: the edge of the ocean - both at the land and the sky -  is ambiguous, unfixed, in constant flux, and elusive.  On a map, a continent simply ends somewhere - but On Location, at the edge of the ocean, the shore line and the horizon are constantly changing.  I just LOVE that.  It is not a profound idea, but the term "edge location", whatever it means in the digital and cyber worlds,  got me thinking about the elusive nature of edges.

Not Quite So Fresh Paint Saturday

OK, so I did not get to the Fresh Paint  Friday video this week.  I needed some concentrated studio time, which means working without a video camera and not spending hours editing video.  The Fresh Paint series will be back on occasion, when I can take the time to do it.  I love the whole process, but it is time consuming.  Support Fresh Paint Fridays by buying a print.

So, what did I get done in the studio this week?  Here are a couple of things; we'll call them Fresh Paint 7 and Fresh Paint 8:

Fresh Paint #7, acrylic on paper, 12"x12"

Fresh Paint #8, acrylic on paper, 12"x12"

And here is another series I'm working on, using the GelliArts gel plate, and making masks and stencils to create shapes.  I'll be teaching a workshop on this at Art and Soul next year, so stay tuned.  The first two are finished, and the rest are in progress.  There are lots more where these came from - I did twenty-four in all, some of which will not make it to the finish line.  Working in series gives me plenty of room to play with the concept. These are all 10"x10" on paper.

So here it is, the Fresh Paint Friday video I promised.  I decided to leave in the original sound rather than add music.  Enjoy!

Here is a response to a few of your comments, including this one:
Could you explain a little bit about the process?
Why so many layers, and what kind of paints you use, they look so rich and thick.
Why so many layers?  Well, the first layer is a starting point.  I generally try to throw out an idea, without planning where it will take me.  In this case the idea was that I wanted some intense warm red peeking through layers of neutral colors.  So I started with red, and then started layering neutrals over it.  Then I let the piece lead me to the next step, and then the next.  I don't set out to achieve a specific outcome, but stay focused, in the moment, paying attention to process. This piece took the whole afternoon; I taped 25 segments, totaling about 30 minutes of video.

See my Links page for the materials I use.

In my workshops I emphasize a focus on process, and demonstrate ways to shift your orientation so that you can get out of your own way and have fun making art!

If you enjoy Fresh Paint Fridays, please support them by buying originals or prints. THANKS!

Fresh Paint Friday #5

Well, it's late in the day, but it IS still Friday, at least in my time zone.  I've been cramming to get this video done!  In this piece I set out to see how busy and colorful I could get without being "too busy" and confused.  As you can see, I did have to cover up a lot of the bright saturated colorful parts in order to get it into focus.  It was a fun challenge.  The pieces is 10"x10" on paper. Enjoy!

Fresh Paint Friday #4

Another Fresh Paint Friday video!  This one actually has no collage in it; I didn't plan that, it's just that the piece didn't seem to call for collage at any point.

Here are a few different stages of the piece in progress:

Covering over all that area with opaque white!

Adding line and shape

What changes to you see between this one and the final piece?

This is the finished piece.

Fresh Paint Friday #3

Another episode of Fresh Paint Friday!  This piece was inspired by another of my 4"x4" Teeny Tiny Art pieces, and I was surprised at how much it actually looks like the original.  When I take inspiration from a finished piece, the new piece usually ends up quite different.  Here is the 4"x4":

And here is the video, with James Hill on the ukulele.  (I am DYING to take a ukulele lesson with him!)

And here is the final piece:

Fresh Paint Friday #2

Here is another episode of Fresh Paint Friday.  This piece is 9"x9", acrylic on printmaking paper.  See my Links Page for information on materials I use.

Fresh Paint #2

The music is called "Envisioning Spring in December", by Jared C. Balogh.  It sure feels like December here, in March!

Here is the piece in progress:

Almost, but not quite done

Fresh Paint Friday

I decided to begin a series called "Fresh Paint Fridays", inspired by Laura Lein-Svencner, who does "Tack Down Tuesdays".  This will be an occasional Friday feature, not a regular one.  I create, from start to finish (which is not my ordinary modus operandi) a collage/painting on Thursday, and post it on Friday.  You see a video of the process, edited so that you aren't watching all afternoon.

For this one I took my inspiration from one of my 4"x4"s.  Hope you enjoy the video!
This is the piece at halftime.

...and the finished piece, "Fresh Paint #1"
You can purchase the original, or a print here.
