Reference Photos

I've never been big on taking photos for reference, so I don't know why I was compelled to do so on this recent trip.  In these photos I see pieces that I did in 2013, as well as rich potential for future work.  I see these Stacks of Shapes studies, and the work I did at the Vermont Studio Center last year.

I have loads more, and will post in groups.  I will also post whatever comes out of the studio from these, but it may be a while.  I think images, for me, take time to sink in and filter through.  Forcing it would probably not be a good idea.  In any case, I am delighted to find that I LIKE taking the photos!

  5. I love the shapes and colors of those stones! Are you willing to share where they came from? It's rare to see the pink and blues in them - I have lots of the more gray, white and tan ones. I've been using that kind of shape since I took your workshop at NCSW and love how much can be done with the stone/egg shape.

    1. These were taken along the north shore of Nova Scotia, along the Bay of Fundy, between Digby and Wolfville.

  6. I too take hundreds of photos especially over the summer for reference. I can already see these as collages using citrasolve papers!

  7. Yay! Good for you! Fabulous image contents and photo composition designs. Am so excited to see this. Everything you see here came out of your own mind! You noticed them because you always have known them, which you expressed in your paintings already. You are one with nature, you are Nature! You have just found Pandora!... :-)

  10. These are great photos; I see how they could provide great inspiration for collage or other types of artwork. I've found that things I've seen or photographed filter through to my work, even when I'm not conscious of it.

  11. Hello Jane!!!
These are terrific.Did you crop them to make the photos square? You have a great eye for composition!! I am poking around your blog while getting very excited to finish up the school year and take your class next week in Gloucester! See you soon. Gwen

  12. I love your exploratory process that sidesteps the freezing pressure of expectations. I am really curious about how to integrate learning in realistic drawing and life drawing with my abstract painting. I connect that with photo reference and drawing on inspiration from my life and environment. I've really liked the videos that Tara Axford has posted on the Gelatin Printing Enthusiasts Facebook page and use them as to increase my attention to form and composition in walks through nature.
