I had another Wax Day the other week, with Jeri MacDonald (as soon as she gets her web site updated, I will post a link). I love working with encaustic on paper. This is
300# hot press watercolor paper, Arches, I believe. We both work with
encaustic medium, a few
colors, oil stick or
pigment stick, and a bit of oil paint. Here are a few of my 5"x5" pieces:

Looks like your acrylic work (which I love), except out of focus from the wax layer. I just don't get encaustic "movement". I can think of a dozen reasons not to use it and only one to use it (cause its popular again). Sorry, just how I feel.

ReplyDeleteI love the look of encaustic work but I imagine it to be a lot of work to do. I didn't know there was such a thing as encaustic paint.
ReplyDeleteI should have said encaustic "paint". It is called paint, but it is in solid form at room temperature, and consists of a mixture of encaustic medium and a LOT of pigment.
DeleteAll art-making is a lot of work if you are doing it right. (My 2 cents).
Yummo! Encaustic is the thing at the moment. It has such tactile qualities.
ReplyDeleteThese are fabulous! I love the texture and depth encaustic adds and you have inspired me to try this. For some reason I thought I could not use water based paint when working with the wax, but it looks like it worked well for you!

ReplyDeleteDo you ever use any of the acrylic gel mediums that mimic encaustic?
ReplyDeleteI don't try to mimic encaustic in acrylic, if that's what you mean. I actually find that a little silly. Each medium has its own voice, and I like to let that be part of the piece.
DeleteI enjoy the "waxy" gloss of encaustic but I do NOT want to get into oil. My work in acrylic, watercolor and mark making and Gelli plate and etc is totally fun. I just can't add oil to the mix. Incidentally I have started finish surfacing my watercolors (painting on aqua or clay board) with Dorland's wax. No heat needed as the wax is soft and can be spread with your fingers. Love the look.
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way. I like the look of encaustic, but don't want to get into the issues of proper ventilation, etc. Maybe I should try Dorland's wax.

ReplyDeleteI really love the look of encaustic. These are fantastic. I've thought of trying it or taking a class, but not sure I'm ready (yet) to buy supplies for another medium. I have a set of Daniel Smith water based oils. I was surprised how rich the color was.. I wonder if I could use these?
ReplyDeleteTake a class. Definitely. Don't use water-based oils with encaustic until you really understand the material. Anything with solvents (not sure about water-based oils) requires particular precautions.
