Although my new studio is not quite complete, I have started moving in, and thought it would be fun to do a little retrospective of its progress.
Here is a photo of the studio I worked in for thirteen years (before that, I was a potter, and when I started doing freelance work and painting I used an upstairs tiny bedroom in the house).
Though this upstairs in a barn served me well for many years, its main challenges were the knee walls and gable ceiling, and the lack of running water in the building. No sink, no bathroom.
Beginning to pour concrete for the foundation
The deck is done and framing the walls begins
Second floor and loft framing begin
Beginning to close it in
Interior, sometime in the summer
Exterior, awaiting exterior insulation, strapping, and siding.
Drywall defines the space.
Exterior is insulated and strapped, shingles are going up.
Here is a brief tour of the studio after the first day of working in it.
Congratulations, Jane - how exciting!!! I just upgraded from a rental space to my own barn! No running water or bathroom, but at least it's heated : ) All the best to you!
lovely space, i love the high ceilings/ loft. i hope you take us on another tour when you are moved in, starting from inside of your house moving on into the studio.
Congrats and you are blessed with this beautiful space - well deserved and what a great place to work! Love the loft - for storage? Open floors with no stacked boxes of supplies would be a dream!
Well, far be it from me to leave open space open. The loft will be my office, yoga space, music space, and storage. We will put in a spiral staircase and railings at some point.
Ha! Peggy, you've paid for more than the heated floors! All my workshop participants, collectors, readers, etc are responsible for this enormous gift! I am gobsmacked with it!
I have always wanted private art space and for possible teaching, but mostly huge bare walls, aahhhhh the possibilities...happy for you. Use it in good health and luck.
The walls look nice and thick for great insulation, and radiant floor heat is perfect for our climate. We have the same in the home we built over 20 years ago and I've been sooooo happy ever since. Long time coming, but oh so worth it.
Cool! Yeah, the double insulation (inside between studs, AND outside) is de rigeur these days, I gather, and the radiant floor is AWESOME! Hope you can come make art here in 2019.
Thanks, Liz! I do hope to have small mentoring workshops in the studio. Maybe two or three participants. Conveniently, there is a rental house next door with three bedrooms, two baths, full kitchen, etc.
Thanks, Asta! My husband is a building designer, so I left that to him. So many little things I would not have thought of that make it beautifully functional and inspiring and convenient.
Jane, we met at the Golden gathering in Miami. Your new space is amazing and usually I would be jealous...but you give so much inspiration to so may people, myself included that I only have feelings of joy, warmth and gratitude. Enjoy your space as so many above have said you truly deserve it! Last year I had a week's residency in Cornwall..it has been booked a year before and by the time it came I was sorted about what to use it for, I wanted to explore mark making more and decided to just take mark making tools very few coloyrs, my gelli, no panels, no finished pieces. By chance the night before I watched your Black and White video and it set me off for the week, which has since become 6 months of exploring marks, making brushes (Lorna Crane) and a fantastic personal journey. You have no idea the impact you have on so many of us....so enjoy your space 😁💙💚💛
OMG, Sally! I am so happy that you found inspiration in one of my videos! Yes, of course I remember meeting you at the Gathering. If you are ever over on this side of the pond, we could play in my new studio!
WOW! A wonderful, light filled space. Enjoy every moment in it! Feel the creativity anew! How's the Rupert Store project going? Happy Holidays and a good year ahead, Ellen
