[It has been pointed out to me that I have misspelled CELADON. Whoops! Very bad manners. I won't change it in the post or video; just humor me and my misspelling. (Thanks, Lucie).]
I get asked about this color pretty frequently. Celedon. It's a color from Blick Matte Acrylics, and it is only available in 2 oz bottles. I typically put four to six bottles of it in each Blick order. I recommend you do the same, so that they might consider offering it in the 8 oz size. However, you can mix your own, and get some variation and nuance to your taste:
This is the "piece" I made with the leftovers.
This piece obviously relies heavily on this celedon range of color. This is an example in my Balancing Opposites composition course: balancing large areas with small elements.
This is the GIVEAWAY!!!
I am offering a giveaway that includes:
8 oz bottle of Black
8 oz bottle of White
2 oz bottle of Celedon
1 oz (I think) of Golden Open Hansa Yellow. (The Open acrylics take longer to dry, but mixed with other colors they just extend the working time a bit).
To enter the drawing, just comment on this post, and identify yourself. I will post a winner on Wedneesday, February 18, and it is the winner's responsibility to contact me with a mailing address. Good luck! And have fun mixing your own celedon and other beautiful neutrals.
Another giveaway, what fun! You are a generous one! I love seeing the colors emerge when mixing. That celadon is a pretty one... Carroll here, in snowy/cold northern Vermont, cuddled on the couch...keeping warm. Hope you are too!
One of my favorite colors, thanks for showcasing it, and thanks for the chance at the giveaway, you are always so generous with your tutorials and gifts!....AnnaH
Thanks for sharing. I love your chicken. So adorable. I'm April from SE WA state where we are supposed to get to 63 today. So looking for some sunshine. I'm going to try you color mixing for this. Looks like fun.
Thank you for the mixing tips! I always mix my own greys using Canvas Gesso, Black and a bit of green. I am definitely going to try your homemade Celedon in my next painting this week😊
Liz Lystra here, Thank you for showing us how to get that beautiful grey. I'm adding Celedon to my Dick Blick wish list so I get it with my next order. Meanwhile, I'll mix my own.
Thanks for this tip. I'll give it a try this weekend. I usually use colors right from the tube with the exception of adding white but I'm trying to branch out into mixing ranges of my own. This is good encouragement.
Hopefully, I will be able to publish my comment. I am new to all of this, and would love to participate in this generous give away. Thank you for sharing your talent and insight with a newbee like myself.
Love this color! As we await our next winter storm here in the northeast this just says spring! Thank you for the opportunity to enter in your generous giveaway!
I was in my studio yesterday trying to mix that very color - apparently I wasn't even close lol. Thanks for the video and the chance to win a give away! Diane from Alberta canada
Great tutorial! I love watching you work and am looking forward to your next workshop at AVA. It's snowing here in White River Junction, so is a perfect day to hang out at home putting paint to paper. Hope you are warm in Rupert!
You always have such great tips. Thanks for the chance to win! I might just play with paint a bit this weekend while the snow blows around outside.....Mandy from Duxbury, MA
Thanks for the tip, Jane. I was surprised you started with yellow instead of green but very soon I realized of course it make sense because yellow+blue=green! How interesting! Thanks! Shuya C from the UK.
Thank you for sharing, I always learn something new when I watch your videos. Our painting styles are so different and I always walk away with a fresh perspective!
Wow, Jane, mind blown! Thank you so much for posting this! The power of digital media, Facebook, and wonderful people comes to play in life once again. I absolutely thank you so much. I live in Connecticut and would love to someday take one of your passes or more than one if I'm able. I hope to meet you someday soon. Thank you, Jennifer Johnson.
Can I ask a question though? Those acrylic paints you get from Blick Matte Acrylics, are they more like good quality of craft paint in fluid form? I wonder if I can get something similar in the UK ... quality and price wise ... (Golden is sooooooooo much more expensive here). Thank you ,Jane.
Just love to watch your expert hand mixing color. I am so inspired, even though I've seen you in person (Omega), especially when I feel stuck in my collage-making. I love the Celedon, both purchased and home-made. I love it when you blend in your unused paints and use that as your background for something new. I especially love the bottom picture with the bits of newsprint. Thanks so much for these postings.
I love the color celedon so much that I almost named my business celedon (sadly I was aggressively talked out of it :( ) Great giveaway! Thanks from Textile Recycler
I adore that color, and I think I like the options using white, black and various yellows even better. The only thing I don't like about those Blick matte acrylics is that the 4 oz. plastic bottle is almost impossible to squeeze. It is exceptionally difficult for old hands like mine. Otherwise I like those paints.
Hi I'm Katherine Lake from Atascadero California. I just started painting about 6 months ago and have so much to learn. I am very grateful to have found your website and instructional videos and blog. I also found your book on collaging with color at the library yesterday. Thank you!
Namaste from India. I love the way you mixed colors and showed how it worked. Enhances my colour mixing knowledge (An area where I feel I need work) So much to learn. And this is valuable. Thank you for sharing. And sending my love to your chicken.
I fell in love with Celadon last summer after trying it out in a series of deli paper prints inspired by your online demo. As Connie R. said, the bottle is impossible to squeeze. My own formula for the color is: 2 Tablespoons Titan Buff, 1/2 tsp Sap Green, 1/4 tsp raw umber (Golden liquid paints). I like my invention as a starting point but it doesn't have the matte finish nor is it quite so opaque as the Blick product. Guess I'll have to switch with the opaque matte white or gesso if I want to get the opaque look. For storage, I have purchased empty 1 oz. bottles directly from Golden and they are far more squeezable. As you show here, the fun comes with the close variants. God is in the details! And speaking of details, Agnes' plumage is glorious. So glad to see her strutting her stuff again! Hope you and she haven't been too snowed under in all those blizzards that have been slamming Vermont!
l notice it also the background colour for this blog! :) It is not a clour l have normally warmed to but having seen your work ... am begining to use it more often. You are right, it is an amazing colour, that is often over looked. Thank you for introducing me to it. :) Lynda
I don't see my comment and I forgot to identify myself. .So, I am sending it again. Carol from Alma Michigan. Would love to try this celadon. Thank you for the chance to win your new giveaway.
I love the Celadon and have a bottle of it myself that I dip into frequently - I think it is a color that is often not appreciated enough but I notice your blog background is Celadon! Never thought to get more nuanced shades by adding other colors - great tip! msmathey@gmail.com from Owensboro, KY
I can't believe I've never used Celadon - it's a gorgeous color. I have light sage walls in one room - maybe it's really Celadon and I didn't know it. Thanks for this give-away.
Thank you for letting us watch your work! I have learned so much from your videos. Celadon was my favorite glaze color when i was throwing pots -- glad to see you love it, too:)
I loved Studio Tour with Chicken. Would that draw more people to my Open Studio? Perhaps Agnes would like a performance gig? (Also liked the color mixing!)
Hi Jane, my name is Diane Scrivener. I love the collage piece that you did using this color! It would be great to win this give away... not only an opportunity to play with these colors, but a chance to try out some new brands as well =)
I don't usually think to mix my paints with any colors other than white or black, so your combos amaze me. I will become more adventurous because of it. I love that celadon color!
Hi Jane - great post! I was wondering awhile ago how to mix Celedon - I know I heard it in a class you taught… I use Celedon a great deal, its my favorite neutral. Its very useful to know how to make all of these variations. This is Melanie from Seattle (soon to be Bellingham).
Greetings Jane: Thank you for your recent post on Celadan, a new color for me. And, thanks for your generocity in teaching us so much. I paint along with you frequently and it has helped me a good deal as a Painter. Have A Most Creative Year! Hank Keneally

I don't know how you do it! You take paint leftovers, cover paper and produce a beautiful piece of art. Wonderful. And I love the color. I can't wait to experiment mixing some myself. Thanks for the inspiration! (Barb - cHim Prints)
Ooooh...I was mixing some celadon color today....lovely color and variations. Your videos are so valuable. I'd love to win the giveaway. Melody in Oregon.
I work so often in blues and greens that I forget to use more earthy tones. I've never used this colour before. Looks great! Nicole W. (aka @coastalnicole)
Love celadon and Quin yellow. you have me hooked. I just got my Blick order with 4 bottles. Is it greedy to want more?? So be it. Susan in Oakton where the power is still on at the moment.
Identifying myself: Aimeslee Winans, glad to meet you. I love your green-gold version of the celadon. And personally, I prefer it spelled with 2 E's, I think it has to do with celery. So, no problem from me, lol. Thanks for the giveaway op, xoxo
Hi, Jane, celadon is one of my very favorite colors. In fact, the walls of my living room, dining room, kitchen, and hallway are painted this color. It is so calming. I actually made a collage a while back that has very similar colors to the one you posted. marilyn in Port Townsend
I am a Blick celadon fan too but love that I can mix my own. Thanks! Took your encaustic class in Portland a couple of years back and looking forward to two more at the upcoming Portland Art and Soul. Love your videos, watch them regularly.
Lynne for Yorkshire, UK Another really helpful video. I don't know anywhere I could get Celadon in the UK, and I love it in your paintings, so this video is very helpful as I have black, white and an Indian Yellow, and will give it a go today. Is the 'Balancing Opposites' in any of your online workshops? thanks
I thoroughly enjoy watching you mix colors and the results you achieve. I've seen you use the Celadon in other videos and tutorials and it looks delightful. If I had known better, I would have added it to my last Dick Blick Order. Thanks for sharing and the opportunity to win some paints.
Are those really old newspaper clippings in your collage. Or did you just stain them to look old? I've got newspaper clippings my dad or mom saved while he was overseas in WWII. They really aren't of any use to anyone, but this gives me an idea of how to preserve them.
Thank you ever so much for this wonderful opportunity to win your gracious giveaway! Love watching your art videos! I never worked with the Celedon before. Would love to try it if I win! nydia1@cox.net
Thank you Jane for the inspiring demo! Celadon is usually out of my comfort zone, but I am reminded to explore these colors when I see your vids! Many thanks for the giveaway! I hope I win someday! Thank you! Dana (Aspiring Dana), Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Hi Jane, Love the Agnus strutting around the studio!!! We get so much of our inspiration from nature and her lovely creatures. Thank you for the lesson on mixing with celedon green as I am new to the mixing world. Have a wonderful day.
Celadon — and her silvery sister, "sage" — is an important part of the Southwestern / High Plains palette ... thanks for this tutorial, Jane! Jocelyn in Denver
Each time you share I gain new inspiration, thanks for inspiring! Love these color combos, wouldn't be ones I would pick but you challenged us to go with colors we aren't normally attracted to.
Shoot. I was just at Blick last week and missed out on getting this beautiful color. Wish I'd seen this first. Oh well, a good excuse to go back! Carol in the windy city.
Liquitex made a celadon called Baltic Green. I used to use it a lot, but I'm not sure if they still make it. Which is why knowing how to mix your own is best!
I am very fond of greens, especially this group of soothing grey-greens. Whenever I see Celadon pottery in a museum, I just love their color, with subtle differences in each. A color that goes with so many others. Thank you Jane for your inspiration. Christine from Bourbonnais, Illinois

Hello Jane! I am inspired by your spirit of "discovery". What a beautiful mix you have here! Love it! I'm looking forward to seeing what other delicious colours you create! Annie from Alberta, Canada.
I have been trying to figure out just what it is about your art that so speaks to me. Abstract with a feeling of atmosphere which makes me think of nature? No, there's more. Calm? Peace? No, I don't have it identified yet. There's something more that reaches beyond what I can identify to touch me. Thank you for sharing your at and self.
I Love the Celadon, thank you for sharing the formula! I also really like the monochromatic pieces you made with the different variations, I am heading into the studio to play right now! Kathy In Texas
We'll forgive you the misspelling of your second favorite color - of course quin gold is first. Great video and info about variations on the theme of celadon.
Hi Jane: I just found out on the Encausticos website that Hansa yellows are not suitable for encaustic as they degrade at 150 degrees. Who knew, but I thought you might like to know as you sometimes do encaustic -which by the way I would love to see more of your process with that -how you incorporate all your wonderful techniques in that medium. Cheers Sharon http://sharonlynnwilliams.com
I have had some spam comments lately, advertising of stupid stuff. So I am moderating comments until I can figure out a better way to prevent spam. THANKS!

ReplyDeleteAre those really old newspaper clippings in your collage. Or did you just stain them to look old? I've got newspaper clippings my dad or mom saved while he was overseas in WWII. They really aren't of any use to anyone, but this gives me an idea of how to preserve them.

ReplyDeleteI have been trying to figure out just what it is about your art that so speaks to me. Abstract with a feeling of atmosphere which makes me think of nature? No, there's more. Calm? Peace? No, I don't have it identified yet. There's something more that reaches beyond what I can identify to touch me. Thank you for sharing your at and self.

We'll forgive you the misspelling of your second favorite color - of course quin gold is first. Great video and info about variations on the theme of celadon.
ReplyDeleteHi Jane: I just found out on the Encausticos website that Hansa yellows are not suitable for encaustic as they degrade at 150 degrees. Who knew, but I thought you might like to know as you sometimes do encaustic -which by the way I would love to see more of your process with that -how you incorporate all your wonderful techniques in that medium.
ReplyDeleteCheers
Sharon
