A suggestion: If you could offer it in late January or very early February, it would give students more time to experiment and make cards, with time still to put them in the mail to recipients. It was too late for me this year to send as Valentine cards, but I'm now experimenting with different shapes, making "all-purpose" cards.Penny Schine Goldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09852332971735293361noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1041249677192613494.post-5785004993689423912023-02-03T13:19:47.270-05:002023-02-03T13:19:47.270-05:00I do not worry about archival ink. I hated to stop to do something as important as having to eating, sleeping or even go to the bathroom. It interrupted my thought process, imagination and my enjoyment. Even today as a mature artist this enthralment still motives me to continue to create.
There’s nothing more that I love to do than play in my studio.
I too am an art educator for over 42 years and my most exciting classes are the ones we can let lose and enjoy the process. It’s a thrill.
No matter what I do that creative aspect always comes through. I get bored very quickly but tapping into that creativity makes the journey so much better.
Donnahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14763235780712510069noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1041249677192613494.post-36467438584245726612022-12-28T15:14:30.245-05:002022-12-28T15:14:30.245-05:00I find it extremely difficult to play in my ‘workr...I find it extremely difficult to play in my ‘workroom’, calling my space a studio seems pretentious and so I never do!
Although I have been making art for almost 40 years, have been selling art for most of this time and winning a few awards along the way I still don’t call myself an artist.
Partly I think that this is a generational thing, with children of my generation being brought up not to be boastful, not to ‘big note’ themselves at all and being ‘put down’ if we did.
Therefore, my art has to be for something, an exhibition and to hopefully to sell. Selling my art justifies the expenditure on materials, which is crazy really as my husband has never begrudged the time or the expense of artwork. My attitude is a legacy of my up bringing, don’t waste time by playing, spend the time working! I really wish I could just ‘play’.
mycamerandme365https://www.blogger.com/profile/02261510194363736776noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1041249677192613494.post-90219313808447572842022-12-28T13:39:30.696-05:002022-12-28T13:39:30.696-05:00I agree with much of what Laura has said. However,...I agree with much of what Laura has said. However, if you don't allocate time in the studio, much like going to work, nothing gets done. My view is that 'brush mileage' is important. The more you do the the better you get. If that is play, or work, it's all good. I play a lot, but probably not enough. I often feel constrained by time, and energy, and tradition. When I'm actually in 'the zone' it is pure joy, and woe betide anyone who interrupts me. My husband is very aware of this.Jo Murrayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09025838373008865611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1041249677192613494.post-54856736457406992522022-12-28T08:28:51.636-05:002022-12-28T08:28:51.636-05:00"Fun" for some is not fun for others. C..."Fun" for some is not fun for others. Consequently, "serious work" for some in just plain fun for others. For me, if what I do in the studio is not fun, if I dread it, if it bothers me, then it's considered "work" for me. If the creative work gets to the point it's not enjoyable then I don't do it anymore and move on to something else. I am retired and really don't want or need my art to become a "job" for me. I am old and life is short! That's not to say I don't revisit the pieces that were "not fun" because after a time away, I lose the need to complete it as I first imagined it would be and simply let go and play with it another way. Many times I love the finished product so the time was not wasted. Also: working in a series always helps me to explore and play with various ideas succinctly and this serves me well. If YOU get people to your FAA site, that has a lot more impact on your sales. My point is to encourage people to market their POD products rather than be passive about it, and to set realistic expectations. I don't know if you saw it at the time, put Sean, the owner made a rare appearance in the forum a few years back. https://fineartamerica.com/showmessages.php?messageid=4294579 He wrote:
"Myth #1: FAA doesn't promote our artists.
If you're reading this, you're probably an artist. As a result, you're on our artist e-mail list, and you get artist-related e-mails. You don't get the buyer e-mails.
If you're on our buyer e-mail list, then you'll see that we're promoting individual artists, groups of artists, and themed collections all the time."
Also, FAA has the yearly billboard competitions with 20-odd large billboards across major US cities. And they advertise on Google.
However, I agree that it is nonetheless very true that we have to promote our work ourselves as FAA/Pixels obviously places their emphasis on top sellers. I've done okay on other platforms (Society 6 and Redbubble) but find it really hard to gain a foothold on FAA. The competition is enormous. The internal search favors work that has sold already, so for a newbie it's hard to even be seen in a keyword search until you sell. Catch 22. The admin has stated many times that a lot of sales there come straight from Google searches too (~35% of visitors to the site), so good descriptions are key to be found. And good keywords for the internal search. It ain't easy, for sure. I think it was a bit easier for early adopters like your good self. But the print quality is fabulous and it frees us from holding inventory, framing, invoicing, shipping etc. It's a win-win. oodleshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10205048301039181405noreply@blogger.com
