New Stripe Piece

I did shoot video of making this piece (or maybe it is a part of a larger piece).  Will post video when I get a chance to edit.  Just wanted to share this for now:

I am really enjoying working with these textures, lines, and colors in the stripe format.  This piece is available as a print from Fine Art America.  It will be part of a larger piece in a solo exhibition at AVA Gallery in Lebanon, NH opening April 21.

Lisa Pressman Workshop at R&F Paint

I just got back from a workshop with Lisa Pressman at R&F Paints, called "Exploring Visual Language: Conversations on Color".  How cool is THAT?  We were working with pigment sticks, which are very rich oil paint in stick form.  Lisa is awesome, the studio is awesome, and the other students were awesome.  Could not have been a more inspiring workshop. Here are a few pix:

Student work from Art and Soul in Portland

I wanted to share with you some of the awesome work my students did at Art and Soul in Portland earlier this month.  Next year's Portland event will be in early April; I will be teaching three classes, of which I have not decide the exact topics yet.  Thinking of something with the gelli arts gel plate, something in composition (each two days), and a one-day class on something else.  Requests and suggestions are welcome.

Stripes and Assmeblage

I've been working on a lot of stripes lately, and finding it really fun to put together layered color, patterns, grid-like elements, and textures.  I am exploring ways in which I can assemble units of stripes into vertical formats.  Take a look:

This is 8" x25"

This is 12"x30"

I tried putting these side by side, using instructions found in this blog post, but I'm not sure this is the right solution.  How do I get a little more space between them?  Anyone?

This stripe format, especially in the strong vertical, is a really fun way to explore composition.  How "busy" can I make a piece and still have it hang together AND look a bit wonky?  I'm thinking of offering a class next year called "Wonky Grids: An Exploration in Composition".    Your thoughts?

Back from Blog Break

I was in Portland, Oregon, last week teaching at Art and Soul.  What a fabulous time!  I had, as usual, great students in my two two-day-plus-one-evening classes, Dynamic Composition and Layering and Excavating.  Plus I got a little time to tool around Portland and visit some family.

Meanwhile, I have a couple of online classes in progress.  Here are some fabulous works by students in my class "100 Drawings on Cheap Paper", which started in February.  I do have a couple spaces left in my 100 Drawings that starts August 31.  Read about it here.
